One of my tasks working at our local 1858 Old Lighthouse Museum (which keeps me so busy these days) is going through old local newspapers. This story caught my eye: (the last part is missing).

Wild really. Like a bit of a dream to find something like that to us all perhaps. Like the newspaper clipping and how cool working for a lighthouse!

I had a chance to quickly scan the yard while a new catch basin was being installed, but I still await permission from the city (the owner) to properly detect it. It has been re-landscaped a few times so IDK what I would find.

Very cool. Been by there many times. Was it moved from its original location? I might be thinking of somewhere else. If they give you a greenlight there maybe you can do around the Zoo tower down the road too. Best of luck with the permission and thanks for being a helpful part of that Light. The Life Saving Station there sure kept busy in the early days.

That is the original location. In 1904 though a new lighthouse was constructed more northward on the lake, which still remains. This one was abandoned and almost was razed before our Historical Society got it and made a museum of it. See below for a vintage pic before it was enlarged. We also use it as a base for our local historical FB group. BTW I also post on your Porter County History Unleashed FB group.

Very interesting! The only think KT ever found when searching around under a house was a half full bottle of whiskey! Gave it to my father, who knew the fellow who built the house....that house had been standing over 40 years when my dad bought it! So it was apparently very well aged! KT was 10 years old at the time and never got a sip of it! LOL

The Museum director took it of me. Yesterday had a few minutes to search again. I'm beginning to think the grounds were resodded a few times. Did find various pieces of metal, a few 1940s Schweppes bottles, bunch of nails from the restoration project they did in the 60s, but no coins. Lots of junk signals, very trashy. We are wanting to find relics from the building itself (locks etc) to display inside the museum. We have some though. I can look anytime so this will be an ongoing project.
