Yesterday I found the 1831 and today the 1825 and 1900 IHP. The large cents are tortured as is pretty much the case. Sometimes I think this period of coin mutilation resulted from the Panic of 1837. It was a lasting serious economic downturn and people suffered. The 1825 has been punched in the head, the 1831 has been ground flat with some sort of geometric patterns engraved on the reverse.
The key I found yesterday matches my set from this area found over the past six years. The latest one is laying across the top. (I only have two 1700s keys to date, much larger and made of iron). The mouth harp looks 1700's to me. Interesting how these pop up around contact period Native American sites, especially since I found I copper trade point a year ago not far from this piece. I like the even number IHP.
I'm not going out detecting tomorrow. It's time to take a break and watch some NFL and WNBA and rest my feet for construction work next week. But I like the area I am hunting. Seeing big forged spikes so colonial potential is high.
