I am still LEARING my ACE250 and what setting I should be using. I have found nothing but JUNK! I"m interested in ANY artifact especially coins. I have access to detect the PERFECT place. The church has been shut down for over 50 years, with a civil war era graveyard in the back. NEVER been hunted, on private property with no roads leading up to it, but its right beside the railroad tracks. (My dad is a train engineer so he spotted it as well as SEVERAL other places). We've got permission to hunt this property from the owner. The owner is man in his 60's who also showed me a foundation of a VERY old house in the woods with a well, outhouse locations, etc. There is also a bottle dump behind it with VERY old bottles still laying there. Even found one that says HALFWAY and the writing is backwards! If I want to discriminate against IRON should I just ignore signals that come up within the first 2 slots....what should I do in hunting this place?! I"m going back tomorrow and want to know everything I can so I can come back with some pics to post up!!!

Based on what you are saying, and you want to dig some artifacts, I wouldn't turn up my disc too much. There are some awfully nice iron artifacts that can be found. However, if you don't want the iron to come into play, I would null out everything just below the nickel/foil range. This would still allow you to pick up possibly a gold ring. JMHO. GL&HH

If you want the artifacts grogmug, I wouldn't use any discrimination whatsoever, or you will miss potential targets. On my detector, a lot of relics come under the negative number readings, where you're likely to think its iron, and its not. So by going by the signals and sounds alone, I can differentiate the good sounds from the iron. I'm not sure if your detector has the same capabilities as in a wide range of sounds, but don't use any discrimination, and you will pick up targets. If the area is very trashy, and you're unsure what to do, dig EVERYTHING! I envy you your new site! All the best with it, and let us know how you go!
Cheers Angela

Angela is correct. I would use NO discrimination there, I would also try and get a Tejon to use there. You can pick a used Tejon for around 350.00 and it is much more sensitive and, while I really don't know a lot about the 250, the Tejon will tell you a lot with it's single tone. Or... a Soverign GT with a 180 meter.
Site's like that are eusually VERY trashy and a high quality detector with a 5" coil will help you more than anything.

Good luck, I would love to see some pics when you start to find some goodies, don't give up. Listen for those round tones and dig them all, the shovel is your best discriminator!

Hey grogmug,

Sounds like a great place to hunt. I'm here in Louisville as well, give me a shout. Be glad to help ya!

I use the ACE250 and I would not discriminate at all in a site like that UNLESS their is alot of coal or char residue as that will give you a headache to listen to! The amount of iron in any given spot can tell you if you are in the right area to find the artifacts you want.

If you dont have unlimited access to the site, concentrate on the outhouse and the corners of the foundation if you are looking for coins. Good Luck, sounds like you have a dandy of a spot!

Yeah that would def. be great...we should meet up. I've found tons of bottles, but NO coins yet. Found a couple of door hinges as well, old buckets, other junk. Maybe I need to be shown how it's done? Let me know!! The outhouse is just a foundation now..there is not an actual outhouse still standing.

i owned an ace 250 and i found i had my best finds running in jewlery mode . since you will still find those nice old pins and such and also any type of non-ferrous coins it mostly will just null out iron. not all nails though .at old homes steads the nails have become rusty and will sing like a shiny new silver dollar but hey dig them too you never know what a signal will bring to your willing hands if you dig. most important leanr the sounds it is giving you .i know the ace is limited to certain sounds but still learn them. and be aware when you dig something where i hit on the ID. and youll be doing just fine
