Well, I'm surprised you didn't immediately recognize the ancient emperor Barberius, with the bust facing right and wearing the Imperial Phrygian cap with laurel wreath! ;)

Really a cool find, Doug - definitely an unusual find for your neck of the woods! If only we could learn the history behind how that coin got to where you found it! I could easily imagine a US Doughboy losing it from around his neck while deployed with the AEF during WWI, maybe during a leave or during a training exercise. We'll never know, but it sure is fun to speculate!

fun find. Barbers are great. I remember detecting Austria getting great signal thinking old kruetzer. Out pops a US wheat penny. Never know what you will find. Guessing that barber was brought over duing WWI. Wheat I found was from occupation after WWII since it was dated 44.

Thank you for the interest shown in the 1 cent coin found here in England.

I search certain fields which are in general referred to as 'night soil fields'.

They are nightmare to search with the amount of ferrous and mon ferrous signals. ( post of other finds on the day to follow)

I remember on my uncles farm men coming and emptying the 'dry' toilet every 2 weeks. A small brick building away from the house, 1 door to go in, sit on a wooden board, do your business, finish. About 2 weeks later, men would come to a side door of the brick out building which was lower than the wooden board and proceed to shovel the ******* out into a cart pulled by 1 horse. Ah those were the good old days!!

The contents of the cart would then be spread on the local farmers fields.

The fact the coin is holed gives it more provenance than just a coin.

I have found older (1800's) British coins here in California. Just yesterday I dug a 1993 two pence coin at the beach. I suppose it could be from Australia?
