Anyone else about to call it quits due to winter?

Sad, sad day for Diggy today.

I'm leaving in 30 minutes to go on my last hunt before winter sets in.

Today is good hunting weather, but starting tomorrow, it takes a very drastic change. It's going to consistently be just above freezing during the day, just below freezing at night, along with snow flurries :crying:

Whoever came up with this stupid winter idea, needs to be fired! :D

The nice thing about living in the south, Winter is the best time to detect! No snow, and the temps are just cold enough to kill off the bugs & brush. Only problem is, it gets dark earlier and shortens my after work hunts.
Absolutely! There are numerous reasons I live in the deep south. Year-round time to enjoy my hobbies is one of them.

I've got another 7-8 weeks of hunting before the freeze sets in and October and November are the best months to hunt in my area. My problem this year is that it keeps on raining every darned weekend. The latest stats from the weather bureau say that out of the last 21 weekends it rained on 16 of them. :rain:

Is there a reason you can't be a snowbird ? I know the costs can be outrageous. But maybe plan 1-2 weeks somewhere a few times each winter to a better climate where you can enjoy your hobby and life.

I'm in So Cal so winter just means that as long as we don't have 15 ft waves it's great detecting conditions since there are less people on the beach...

Fewer things lost though, so I guess it evens out maybe?

What ? What beaches you hit there ? I hitm all in So.Cal. I love 15' surf. Didn't you do good in the beginning of the year when the giant surf rolled in ? I do know some beaches weren't good , but.....

Being a beach hunter who only hunts in winter, weather doesn't affect me ... I don't summer hunt unless I feel like dirt hunting which is rare these days... ;)

I hear you, this year has been horrible on the weekends.. Rain for the last 16 according to the news..

I usually detect into DEC, sometimes JAN - Mostly tot lots and beaches tho

Not a chance.....
Season is just now starting.
The one good thing about living in south central Texas is that the summer is the off season. It really begins in October when the rains start.

We get some legitimate winter here in northern Utah. I usually find a way to keep detecting throughout most of the winter though. Albeit, reduced opportunities, but still, weekly. I travel south when all else fails.

But yeah, whoever came up with winter needs a kick in the gnads.

The winter is some of the best time around here to detect. It rarely freezes up here anymore. The weather here has changed a lot since I was a kid. It used to freeze up for a couple months. Now maybe it will be a couple of days.

I live in the north west corner of Massachusetts and hunt year round... last winter missed maybe a month..... Fortunately for me I hunt the wooded sites, and the leaves will protect against ground freeze to a point.... Last year never turned rock solid. El Nino this year, which is supposed to mean warmer then usual... Got my fingers crossed

Love the fall, love the winter conditionally...as long as the ground isn't frozen

I'll be out in the cold water, best hunting season here. I did take off last winter but plans are to go back thru several of the old spots we did in 2019.. below picture is just about as bad as it gets. Mild compared to the poor guys further North.

KOB,

Snowbirding isn't practical for me. I'll just have to get through the next 5 months with drugs and alcohol .

OBN,

I stared at that picture of you in disbelief for a few seconds. My god man, you're a trooper!
