Unusual cartridge casing found.

Found this unusual cartridge casing in a known Civil War skirmish site. It is .462 diameter and .845 in length. Has a firing pin strike on the edge beside a blown-out centrally located hole. While cleaning it, a round object with a short point fell out of it. No markings to be found. Any ideas what type of cartridge this is?

It looks like it could be a .44 Allen Lipfire, although I'm not very familiar with that cartridge. Could you please post a pic showing the full side view of it?

As for the thing that fell out, to me, it looks like a clump of dirt that formed to the inside of the holes. What material does it seem to be?
