What do you think of a property owner wanting first pick of the finds?

I've offered to and it was agreed to share the finds. Then said "all personal type item" should stay with the property/owner and that I was a coin guy and would like to keep the coins. He was good with that. The farm had been in his family for over 100 years and I used to share cut firewood for his dad many years ago so we sort of new each other anyways which helped. This was done before I even had a detector on site. Worked well. Found a dogtag that was probably his great grandfather's dog from 1920 a few buttons and some 1800's flatware went to the owner. Only coin I found was a 58' flying eagle but was still a happy camper with that. But somewhat depressing as research prior showed since 1830 two families of 15 persons had lived there. Massive filling around the farmhouse since the 1940's. But getting back to the OP issue, just walk away. Looks like they were really looking for a free archeological service for their property or they saw that opportunity when you asked for the permission. Not that uncommon.

sounds right! happens! gotta remember!..it's their land! if they want to be 'cute" like that, not much you can do, except walk away.another reason why, it's a giant pain in da ass asking' permission! ..just sayin'

These people thought you were going to find rare coins and gold all over the place. I would have offered a 20 minute crash course on how to use a detector for free. And of course I would have my pouch pre-filled with a few wheats and a Rosie. Along with some trash. All my good finds are going down my shorts , never to be seen by them. Then they can have the pick of the pouch. This may sound flat out wrong and rude. But no more rude than what this disgusting family was trying to pull over you.

correct! after all, you go to a lot of trouble taking time to ask, and they give ya this sh*t!..they wouldn't see any thing good from me either! I would be pleasant, hunt the property and take the good stuff with ME!..if they follow me I would leave! bye! bye!

My deal would be to split the finds and the owner gets the first pick (one pick). Then it's my turn to pick one and so on until the owner didn't want any more stuff. No way would I bust my butt detecting all day just so someone could take all the good stuff from me.

I've got at least five standing offers to detect on properties, but they all have the same mentality. They get to keep anything they like (or everything, for that matter). The problem with land owners is they think anything dug up on their land belongs to them. That's fine if you dig it yourself, but don't expect me to work for you for free. You want to keep it all, buy a metal detector and see how it goes. They'll give up in an hour after digging endless trash, since they have no idea what a good signal is or even a good VDI number. Just my take on it

hide it! (w.t.f!) you broke ya nuts to get on the property and hunt, why would even think of giving them "any" good stuff! screw that! give 'em the "!!!!" and walk away happy! ..just sayin'

Guess its better than being told "hell no!" like I would if someone asked me

man has a very valid point! why it can be frustrating asking for permission on private land!

One of my veteran hunt buddies from back when I first started metal detecting, had one deep pants pocket for "special" finds. I never needed it but he did on some of our hunts.

Someone ask me if I found anything good and I'd most likely say "I did" and tell the experience. I'm not sure which of us were more right.

you were, but you would also come home with a "handful of nuthin!" for your efforts!

Well it does, digging it up doesn't legally make something yours.

unfortunately, this is true, and it makes it that much tougher to give anything "decent" to them! you supply the effort, and hard work, and they take it from you! not me! no way!...just sayin'

I do same thing... I have offered homeowners whatever they wanted... I have yet to lose any finds to them... they say to me they are interesting but I found them and can keep them...

correct! send 'em on a "guilt trip!" they will "generally" want to see the stuff, but then tell ya to keep 'em! this "does" work, but not with everyone, because everyone's different.

Not only that , give'm this old school trick. Out here , water shut offs are in a small vault on the street. Get a friends car or rental , take off the plates. Middle of the night shut the water off , put a cheap lock on it , and pour a premixed 5 gallon bucket of quick set concrete and close it up !

Just say'n....

I detect a ton of private yards. Only once was I asked by the homeowner (older lady) to give her all my finds. I politely declined to hunt the yard. The vast majority of times the homeowner does not care or even pay attention to my detecting the front yard and curb.
If the homeowner is especially nice, I do volunteer after the hunt is over to give the owner some wheat cents, copper memorials, and perhaps a Sterling ring or dog tag so to be able to keep some historic relics and coins that are part of the history of that home.

If detecting some really historic place, I would detect and give everything to be put on display by the ownership or historical society. Just the fun of finding some really cool stuff would be good enough for me.

We as detectorists should be honest and stick to any agreement with a handshake, and the owner of the property should do the same.

Interested to read all of the above from a UK detectorists perspective :)

Over here the norm is to have an informal agreement up front with the landowner which is typically "we'll go half on any big finds but anything else I can keep". Different landowners have different ideas of "big" but for me it's usually anything over say £200 in value I'd offer half (never had one take me up on it yet but it's polite to do so!).

Some parts of the country it's very hard to get a yes to go detecting but I'm lucky that my nearest farm is a 5 minute walk from my front door and the owner has given me free access to all of his fields. I've had everything from more recent stuff like ww1/2 relics, victorian/georgian/william iii silvers right down through silver hammered pennies (henry ii/iii/v, edward i/ii, elizabeth i etc) and Roman silver denarii.

I take photos of all the interesting stuff and email them to him as he likes to know what's been found on his land. He's never asked for any of the finds but each year at Christmastime I pop round with either a bottle of scotch or a case of beers, and one of the interesting silvers that I've found that year in a little display box with a note saying what it is and where on his property I found it.

Great fun hobby and I enjoy every moment I spend out there beeping and digging :)

reasoning

Id come back 60/40 , he gets 40 % , Id tell him to get a metal detector , to hunt with you , do the work , and he would never get 1st dibbs  That is only grounds prior to the 60s , no old silver , or gold , not worth it.

Reminds me of my first "permission".

My first old farm with nice rolling fields.

I got this permish through my brother who had a friend. She acted cool when I showed up. She had detected the property herself but due to physical problems had not done so in years.

So I start, and first off find a nice Ox Knob. My first legit old find since buying my first real detector. I was stoked.

Then I find an IHP green and crusty.

It started raining and so I head up to show her what I found.

Well, she insisted on keeping both and I handed them over.
Then she said I could come back any time but that she wanted to keep EVERYTHING I found. At the time, as a newbie I just said, "sure!"

Never went back.

Once I get a vibe that is that. I don't do this for aggrevation.

Went on to find other places and people that were easier to work with.

Finding a good permission is the first target. Some are Iffy signals.

Never went back. .....

I'm betting that if/when you went back , and found more goodies, that :

When you show her the pile of stuff @ the tail-gate show (junk and everything), and if you had pulled a particular token or seated off-to-the-side and said "Here's one I don't have for my collection. Can I have this one ?", that she'd have said "yes".

People can/might often say such things (it's their property after all). But in actual human relations effect: I've never had anyone actually truly take everything.

And if I'm wrong, and you have that rare individual who is truly that stingy, then : Fine ! Take a picture of that seated or bust or LC or gold coin, and ... presto: That's 99% of our hobby anyhow, is the thrill of the hunt, the show & tell, etc.... Like a fisherman practicing catch & release: A lot of this hobby is "sport".

I would not thumb my nose at a good permission if it's gonna result in a good find, JUST because I can't keep it. I've got stuff on display in museums , or have given it to owners, and still enjoyed the "feather in my hat" so-to-speak.

Take all the pictures you want of the gold coins you found. Then give them to me. They will be a great addition to my museum.

Thank You !

I could have done that and today I probably would have.

But when I heard her say she was going to keep everything I find I bailed. At the time I didn't have a collection at all and I just didn't think I would feel good about it.

I absolutely dont mind sharing finds, in fact I have tried to give away items to homeowners after that and had them insist I take everything.

But yeah, I agree to a point. But in OPs case, if there is chaos and strife why bother?

So does that mean I'll be able to detect the famous "Kob-in-CA" yard, and find gold coins ? If so, then sure : I'll abide by those terms.

Actually, that would be a BONUS to be able to say : I found these in Kob's front yard. I mean, shucks, you'd have thought kob would have done a better job than that. :?:

Speaking of which : A teaser you tossed my way .... oh-so-long-ago, just resulted in 2 seated coins. Stay tuned for the show & tell post. Oh, and you shall address me as : "Oh mighty one". Ok ?

Of course I bury gold in my yard. Burglars look in the house , Duh ! Looking forward to your latest reveal "oh mighty one"...
