Hello everyone, I'm a newcomer. Ghost digger 2020, new to the forum and the hobby of metal detecting. I am however pretty good at researching and of course making my own idiot assumptions...

I just got my Bounty Hunter Tracker 4 a month ago and have only used it three times so far.
On my second outing, I went to Lake Pochahontas in Morristown NJ after reading an article on the Skylands visitor page. I was hoping to come across an old bottle dump that was mentioned in the article.

while I'm Not sure I found one of the ones mentioned, I did find a bottle dump while detecting.

I started out finding old rusted out tops, and a bunch of different broken glass.
Then I found an old O'DOWDS DAIRY Milk bottle and stopped detecting and began bottle collecting.

My favorite find was an old Devotion Light Candle jar.
The jar was whole without any cracks so after getting home, I soaked the bottle in cold soapy water to loosen the dirt
and roots that had began growing into the bottle from a nearby tree.

Next I used a bottle scrubber and hot soapy water to clean the inside and outside of the jar, before beginning my research.

The bottom of the bottle is marked Patent Applied for, Designed by O.D Guilfoil, so I began a Google search for his name and came up with a Wikipedia page stating:
He was born in Rhinebeck, NY and served in the Washington State Senate from 1889 to 1891. He later retired in Ogdensburg, NY before passing away at the age of 92.

At this point I was still confused about his connection to the jar I had found so I kept digging.

I began searching his name and antique to vintage glass jars, and that's when I found the connection at the Museum of American Glass in West Virgina website.

It wasn't the man who became a member of the Washington State Senate, it was his son,

O.D. Guilfoil jr. who had come up with, and applied for patent of this particular Alpha-Omega cross symbol design. He then assigned his interest to the Muench-Kreuzer Candle Company of Syracuse, NY who manufactured the Devotion lights.

This particular jar that I found is an early pre-patent version before the one listed below.

[info from the Museum's website on similar candles]
Manufacturer/Artist Muench-Kreuzer Candle Company, Inc.
Date Made ca. 1942
Notes Patented April 7, 1942 as a Candle Unit by Oscar D. Guilfoil, Jr., Syracuse, N. Y., assignor to Muench-Kreuzer Candle Co., Inc., Syracuse.

THANKS YOU FOR STOPPING BY.

BE SAFE OUT THERE.
