Photograph of what looks to be an old brass or copper shoe buckle I found in rural Vermont a couple months ago. Could also have come from a saddle/stirrups or leather handbag

Any buckle experts out there? Sorry picture quality isn't better. I need to upgrade my digital camera.

Really nice find. I'm no expert, but it seems like the prongs would hold something like a strap.

Cool.

Yeah, it is a puzzling piece. Definitely old, just not sure how old. Up close, it looks hand wrought, not machine made, so i am guessing pre-1900 as far as age, but probably even older.

I found an almost identical buckle on another website www.horsesoldier.com. That one was excavated in Gettysburg. Photo is attached below. The 2 are VERY similar. Looks like the piece on their website sold for about $10.00, so I'll think I'll keep it.

Update. - I found an identical buckle in the US Navy archives. They have identified it as a shoe buckle dating to circa 1750.

Below are two photos. A seaman's buckle found in a shipwreck from the 18th century and My buckle is missing the swivel piece.
