I didn't buy my DFX just to gain a few inches but because its cheaper than buying several specialized detectors. Although most detectors, to some extent, can be used for multiple types of hunting the advantage goes to the specialized machine. For example the Goldbug is a far better detector for prospecting than say the Coinmaster.

There is also the whole multiple frequency fad. I doesn't necessarily make the detector more versatile, but gives it an edge in identifying targets, giving more depth, and better discrimination. And it is worth an extra $600, because it saves a lot of time digging trash and is loads of fun!
In my opinion, the prospecting detectors can't be compared to most other detectors due to their high specialization. But Goldbug, or GP are certainly better than CoinMaster, or Ace, for example
