Good morning,
I was out detecting yesterday and found this. I can’t figure out what it is for the life of me. Anyone have any idea?

Thanks friends!

Looks like some sort of stop/limit pin, used on a pipe or tube, that has a unique retention mechanism.
Very cool!

It was found on a hunting/fishing property dating back to the early 1900s. Near it was a very small horse shoe. Wondering if it was a piece of some type of trapping mechanism. Those two small holes on the top seem to be used to keep it open. I hammered the rest of that area and nothing else came up.

Thanks for the replies friends!

Does slightly remind me of Gopher or Mole traps.

Odd piece and amazed it still functions.
Added pictures helped.

it kind of does look like an old trap, but i feel like the long post would be in the way of it trapping anything.

OP: are there any marks or numbers on it? might have to try to scrape some rust.

Could there have been wooden handles attached to where you are squeezing it? The out turned teeth at the end of the "Gripper" almost look like a spreader of some sort like for a ring or band possibly?

reminds me of some sort of pin and locking device. The pin would go through the hole and the arms would go over the wagon arm/plow and keep it locked in place

my guess anyway

Makes good sense. would only need your thumbs to spread it and drop it down over the hitch bar with pin through the middle. I've seen something similar to hold old cannon wheels on the carriage. Found another picture of one, but the link on the site is dead and no description. A little clearer shot though.

That clearer picture is nice. Looking at old Lynch Pins online, it definitely looks like it could be a variant of one. I think you're on it.
