I found this the other day and was wondering what you guys thing it would grade. I have no experience when it comes to even guessing.

I'm not a grading expert, but I'd call it VF+ or EF with environmental damage. I think if you submitted it to a grading service, they would note the environmental damage on the slab.

However, I wouldn't kick it out of my collection, if I had it. :)

Want to get better at grading U.S. coins? The Professional Coin Grading Service, aka PCGS, has a couple of handy APPS for mobile devices. In the APP Store or Google Play, search for PCGS, and you’ll find PCGS Photograde and Price Guide.
Some very good photographs of coins in all denominations as well as Colonials.
Here’s a screenshot of a portion of the Seated Half Dime page. You can also zoom in for closer view. This example is lower resolution due to file size limitations of this forum, but if you download this free APP, I think you’ll refer to it often.

Completely agree.

Without the damage your coin would most likely grade XF and possibly even AU but the damage it has basically kills it. A real shame because it shows so much detail...most silver coins come out of the ground clean....was this one dug at a site that had a fire?

Looks like it might have sat in water at one time. I found a 1877 seated dime that was in great condition but had the same black film from being at the site of an old watering hole.
