Lightning Rod??

Found this brass stake with a threaded fitting on top of it while hunting the front yard of a 1920's house. It is a little over 9" long and the inside diameter of the threaded fitting is approximately 5/8". My hunting buddy can usually id most things we find, but neither of us have ever seen anything like this before. He did say that it could possibly be the top part of a lightning rod??

Do those things actually work, considering they are just historical relics?
The ones I have seen on roofs have a 1 inch wide thin copper woven wire running from the rod to the ground.
