Help explained my test result

I went out to my back yard and dropped a brass relic in a 7 inch deep hole. Without filling in the hole I swung the coil over it and got nothing but chatter. There was no diggable signal at all. The same relic will signal at ten inches on an air test. Do I have some setting screwed up? I’m using the at pro with sensitivity 2 bars from max. I know that I have trouble ground balancing because I have no clean ground to balance over. Thanks for the help.

Did you try changing the orientation of the target in the hole? Like flat, on its side, same result? Assume the hole is clean otherwise?

You probably answered it yourself when you said you had no clean ground to GB on, there's probably a load of junk near the hole that's masking it.

You may have to make your own clean dirt by screening/sieving the soil to kick out all the junk. I've had to clean some junky places to get a confident ground balance.

If it is dry soil you can sieve with 1/8" mesh and get out most of the demons. I never cease to marvel how a single brass BB or drop of solder will excite the AT Max. I gotta get back to the Rockies to look for gold nuggets!
