We researched it as a fun project just in the last couple days and it turned out to be a US Civil War cavalry sword (North). It was detected in an old stone foundation near Hockessin Delaware. In our recent project I contacted someone from Historical Antiques Network LLC and found out it was probably stolen from a collector because the stamps on the hand guard are apparently the location where the sword was found originally. New Market VA. How it ended up where it did is anyone's guess. Sword's worth in current condition maybe $500-$600 according to that expert. There was a military academy at the original location (New Market) where the Southern cadets were formed into four Infantry Co., with one Artillery Co. A battle ensued nearby. It appears to be a remnant of that battle. It has been sitting in his gun cabinet for 45-ish years so imagine the metal detector he used back then. We still don't know the full story and who it was issued to because the serial number is pretty pitted/roached. Close enough though to know at least part of the story which made us both happy.
