Nice. Definitely would want to open it. Looks hinged up top, the face cover would open upwards tword the ring. I'd soak it in oil and be careful with something thin flat plastic to work around it.

could be a few coins in that....some persons wearable emergency money.

It is much smaller than a nickle or one cent so even a dime would not fit.
Look at the photos again.

It even seems too small for matches.
Maybe a different style locket with a picture inside.

Now I want to see what is in it. Just please be careful getting it open.

but a couple half dimes or gold 1 dollar coins might.....just wishful thinking since my buddy found a late 1800s pendent with 5 Indians and a v nick in it

Wow that would be a nice find! I'll try and open it and see what surprises may or may not be inside. If it was a picture it is probably dissolved by now. Hope it's nothing gross like fingernail clippings or hair.

Don't soak it in anything. It could seep in and ruin whatever is in there.

Haha, Freight On Board! I like that. I had to google it to be honest!

I've always thought a fob was a dangly bit hanging on a chain or ring... as in a key fob. Looking it up, here's what I found

1 - a small pocket just below the waistline in trousers for a watch, keys, change, etc.Compare watch pocket.
2 - a short chain or ribbon, usually with a medallion or similar ornament, attached to a watch and worn hanging from a pocket.
3 - the medallion or ornament itself.

In the case of F.O.B., I always thought it meant Free On Board. (Look that up in your Funk And Wagnalls! )

This thread gave me some laughs and I enjoyed everyone's input.

After unpacking the dirt from inside I found the piece is empty. The end with the ring attached does not seem to be removable.

Now I am thinking a cover for a mustache comb, knife or something that shoved into it and clicked in.

The dime is for size reference.

Cool find anyways! I knew it was small but I didn’t realize it was that small!
