I live on a known Civil War Camp site, a Union area during the occupation of Alexandria VA. The site has modern and CW nails and construction debris, all appearing in the same strata. I’ve found a lot of camp lead and three ringers, along with various sizes of round shot. Showing some nails I’ve pulled and cleaned, looking to see if you all opine they’re of CW vintage. The one on top under the bullets (added for size context) is round but super old; there was a head at the top and bottom like a nail but disintegrated quickly while cleaning. Thoughts?

They look like square nails, I'd bet they are pretty old. Can you see any bare metal that looks like wood grain? That will be the wrought iron, I live just north of you and find them all the time in my cw and colonial camp sites.

No, they’re too damaged but I’ll post another more detailed pic of the round nail or whatever that is. Definitely a wood grain look.
