cleaning off metal

do you guys know how to clean rust safely off of metal. i have attached photos of where the rust is...its on the little tray and the foot rest.

i read online vinegar...but will that ruin the scooter at all?

please let me know any suggestions. thanks guys

Have you though of trying CLR liquid cleaner? The advertisements shows it works great on rust. I use it for hard water stains.

CLR dissolves rust fairly well. Other good products for this are Evaporust, and naval jelly. Rubber gloves & proper ventilation would be smart. Use the chemical of your choice, then brass brush or scrub with sos or steel wool. Then wipe and clean. Then treat to prevent re-rusting: Primer/paint, clear coat, or oil rubbing, wax, or gun blue if a darker color is ok.

CLR works works quite well. I used it on an old silver coin whose date I couldn't read, and it brought out the date quite nicely. I had previously soaked the coin in vinegar and it didn't do much.
