Roughly the size of a nickel, two piece, found on 1850 homesite.

General service, I think this style was 1900-1920ish. Is it a flat button or hat piece?

It's completely flat, with shank. Shank has piece of metal wire in it, was holding it to something. Thanks for the info!

Good score, look for early 1900s general service buttons, you'll find it. I had one similar and it was 1920ish

Folks, wasn't that wire used to attach it to the inside of the coat as a spare button? That's what I was told but am not sure if there were other reasons for the wire.

Anyone have a photo of what this hat band would have looked like? This is my first military item and am very curious.
