Kind of a neat scientific discovery of an event we all should give thanks to on a good day!

Scientists witness huge cosmic crash, find origins of gold: https://usat.ly/2ypt0Il

Funny thing is how long ago that actually happened........

You mean when the neutron stars actually collided, or when we saw it? We saw it in August, but it takes some time for our researchers to verify and document their findings.

It also takes a rather long time for the light depicting the event to reach our little rock. That could very well have happened a thousand years ago.

It is likely that in the vast majority of the universe, silver, gold, platinum, rhodium, etc are just as scarce as they are here on Earth. The violent deaths of super massive stars and the attempts of two neutron stars trying to occupy the same space at the same time don't happen every day.

It is likely there is a planet or two out there where gold and platinum is as common as silicon, iron, and copper is here on earth. Of course, if civilization existed on those planets - iron and copper would be extremely valuable commodities - after all, you can't build with gold or platinum.

No, I mean when the collision actually occurred. What did it say, 130 Million years ago, or something like that?
