Has anyone ever seen iron civil war buckles that were used and part of the gear? I don't have a pic yet, but the holes where a strap went through the middle were definitely done by hand. The back was found on a civil war battlefield. I found a knapsack triangle a few yards over and the top of a powder flask.

I'll try to post pics in the morning.

It's 2.5 inches tall and 3 inches wide.

I don't know of any commercially made steel plate. So if that is what it is, I would say it is a one of a kind and was done in the field.

I don't think it is a buckle of any type.
Looks more like a shim used of some farming equipment and probably mid 1900's.
