Been digging an empty lot where a 1905 house burned down. One of the most difficult yards I’ve had with all the trash, nails and melted metal. When I first found this, I assumed it was counterfeit, but I’m pretty confident it’s the real deal, just marred from the fire. My first silver dollar.

Wow! That's the ugliest (and possibly coolest) Morgan dollar I've seen dug! I love it! Great job persevering through all that trash and melted metal. Just spectacular.

even if it is "ugly" , it still allows you entry into the prestigious "morgan dollar club" :cool3: But for the life of me: I can't figure out how a fire could do that to a silver dollar ? :?:

It’s certainly possible that it’s a counterfeit. I plan on getting it tested.

Interesting find. But wouldn't that now be classified as a half-dollar ?

You dont need to go have it tested, there's a method at home to test silver that is accurate. Take some aluminum foil, spit on your coin, wrap the aluminum completely around it. Almost instantly, you should smell the sulfur oxides (rotten egg smell) and it should heat up and even smoke a little sometimes. If none of these reactions occur, it is NOT silver. Awesome find regardless! Looks legit to me but, wouldnt it be a HALF dollar now  congrats!

Youch! Congrats on finding your first silver dollar, but sorry to see what's left of it. Makes you wonder if there was a coin collection in the fire, or if it was lost long before the fire. I doubt it would look like that if it was inches below ground when the fire happened, but maybe it was under the porch or something?

Bummer.....I hate those burnt coins....LOL. I was detecting an old campground a few days ago and found a Mercury dime. It had been lost for years, then someone built a camp fire over it! It was 6" deep in charcoal and ashes. Its the only one I've ever found without a date, but you can read the S mint mark!
