I dug this in the dark and just threw it in my pocket. Here are a couple pictures before I rinsed it of. And the rest are after I scrubbed it. I can't seem to get the rest of that dark crud off. It is very heavy for its size. It weighs over 3 oz, but it might just be full of dirt. The more I look at it it doesn't seem like ring is movable. It does look like its hinged on the back. I think I might try to pry it open. I really don't know what to think. Anyone have any ideas on it?

***EDIT: I was able to pry it open! Here is the makers mark. Looks like a C&B in an Iron Cross. It says "1776 Centennial 1876. Trademark Registered". There is a glass plate that is cracked under the lid. Not sure if I should take the glass out and look inside.

I figured you'd be out hunting somewhere with the warm weather. Nice find. No Silver? There's still the weekend before the snow.

First hunt with the 800 that didn't include silver! This pocket watch has me intrigued though. It was fun to dig. I'm going to try and pop it open.

I was able to pop it open. If anyone has any information on the maker please share. If it really is from 1876. That would be awesome.

Thats just cool. My son found one (not like yours), and it's been just as cool everytime I look at it. Best I've done is pocket watch innards, and a brass pocket watch back.

Congrats on a very neat recovery Tyler. Relics like this serve as what was of those time. Before wrist watches. I have dug a few pocket watches and get excited by them and doing history checks on them. Trapper

Very cool find SW! It’s intriguing to wonder about its history and when it was lost.
Congratulations and best of luck!

That's a very cool find there Stiffy! :)

That's pretty cool. Nice find!

Congrats on that neat find!

Thanks guys! That was fun to find for sure. I left it on the kitchen counter and my wife almost threw it away. I guess to the average person it just looks like rusty junk. Glad you guys liked looking at it.
