I took my Minelab Equinox 800 out for its 2nd maiden voyage yesterday to a park that has been heavily pounded since the mid 80s. It didn't let me down. I concentrated on the lawns where coins sink deep instead of the areas where the good shallow coins used to be. It was 30 degrees & Noxie chattered quite a bit but came through. I got a faint nickel signal, depth gauge pegged out, number 11 showing. Digging down 9" I found a smooth nickel sized coin. A little while later I got the same signal & 8" down up came another smooth nickel sized coin. I have learned in the past not to try & clean these type of coins until I can get home & use the right equipment…..field cleaning will usually damage the coin. One turned out to be an 1897 V nickel, and the other a Buffalo nickel with a barely readable date of 1926 plain. I also found a 1947-P Jefferson nickel in good shape. Among other things I found was a brass “Todays Dentristy” medallion, and a very old & corroded button. Today I found a nickel trio, V, Buffalo, & Jefferson! One thing I’ve learned about the Equinox is that the dept gauge is almost useless and it should only be interpreted as “shallow” or “deep”, and that’s sad because a detector of this quality should have an excellent depth indicator. I have been over this same patch of lawn with my Whites MXT many times, and it would have never found these coins, and didn’t…….LOL
