I've looked at hundreds of these old topo maps around my area and have never came across this red square on any other locations before, does anyone have any idea what it means? The black squares are always houses, outlined empty squares are barns, but red squares? It's clearly there on the 1925 map and gone on the 1942 map. Looking at the 38 aerial I can't really see anything in that area but there is a small patch of trees that could be hiding something or whatever the red square may be was gone by 38. Anyone have any ideas?

I don't know for sure but an idea I had was could this be a fire lookout tower. Is the square on one of the higher points on the map?

Hmmm, I don't think the elevation is any different. It's just in a field area surrounded by 3 creeks, but a lookout is possible I suppose. Usually things like that would be labeled.

The Kremlin is in Russia so it can't be THAT Red Square...
