Give us a good look at the back. That style of button may be a bit difficult to ID. The English had a ton of those buttons and we had a few. But many of those types were reproduced to be used as fashion buttons. Most fashion buttons did have an iron back.

Check out this site for a history of British naval buttons. MY gut feeling is your button is a little to crude to be military, but ground conditions could cause that to happen. When you pull up this site, hit the "Home" button for more info on naval buttons.

Your button has a backmark, if you can make it out, I would be much more able to ID the button. On page 88 of Albert's button book, there is a one piece that looks a lot like yours, except it doesn't have the lines in the anchor. The backmark on that button has 8 five-pointed stars.
