Let's see your best finds!

Here is my best find ever. I had visited a relative in CT in 2017 who lives on an old farm with lots of land. The property is late 1700's and my relatives have lived there a very long time...I'm confident it had never been detected. Got a great signal in a field near the house and my heart nearly stopped when I saw a holed 1806 Eight Real in the hole. Only my second Spanish ever. A day I'll never forget.

My avatar is my best find (1800 half dime in nice condition). Second place would be a 1793 chain cent, but it was in really abused condition.

I found this clay pipe stem and this flow blue china on a farm were these two people once lived. These two items match up with the time period that they lived there so I think that they might have actually belonged to them.

I. Think the pipe was hers !

Best find?

Without a doubt it’s this silver Scottish medallion found at the Florida Georgia border. It was coated in hard dried mud and I believed it was a can lid and was about to toss it into a recycling barrel when some mud broke off revealing a loop (bail) used to wear the item.
I started to clean it and found it was silver and heavily engraved with Scottish mottos, symbols and the date of August 23, 1299. To my amazement I saw my family’s motto I MAK SICKER engraved. It was awarded to my family when one of my ancestors helped Robert Bruis ( the Bruce) murder John Comyn in a church which allowed him to become King. The phrase means I MAKE SURE. Our crest includes a hand holding a bloody dagger.

I was surprised to learn another family motto appears on the opposite side with the phrase TOUCH AND I PEARCE (Pierce) was used during the Wallace Wars

I contacted a large number of experts in Scottish history researching this. If you’re interested in learning more there is a video of a presentation on it on YouTube. Look for CHIP KIRKPATRICK SHED.

How did it end up here? In 1740 James Ogilthorpe began the colony of Georgia and was tasked with keeping the Spanish in Florida from invading South Carolina. So he recruited a number of Scots who emigrated and formed the town of Darien, a short drive away. The medallion is dented, possibly in combat (I found a 1718 Spanish Reale in the same area) and was possibly lost for 400 years until I found it.

I think my best find is this 5th Century Anglo Saxon Silver Neck Collar. Found near Salisbury, England a few years ago, it was declared treasure and is now owned by the Salisbury Museum. My oldest jewelry find by far.

Unfortunately I do not have pics of my best finds, as it was 25+ years ago. But my best single coin was a 1921 SLQ in a solid EF40+, traded it for a new detector! Best multi coin was a cache of 100 silver half dollars dated between 1917 and 1963, in an old paint can under a set of stairs. The most intriguing one was a Civil War reunion badge with the soldiers name, E. A. Gordon, 4th Maine. Researched him and found out he survived the war and was wounded at Gettysburg. Unfortunately, most of this was stolen!

I'm a little late to this post. Dunno how I missed it. An 8 reale is on my bucket list. I've got 1/4's, 1/2, 1's, 2's, and 4's, but never an 8 reale ! Green with envy. :p

And I love the pix of it posing in your hand. It gives an idea of just how big those coins were !

Was the 1/4 a cut 1/2 reale or something? I thought they only went to 1/2.

Believe it or not, there were a few countries in south america/Mexico and a few mints, that for a few years, that actually made 1/4 reales out of silver. They are SUPER SMALL . But most of the 1/4 reales are fractional coppers, not silver.

It's the bottom coin on these two pictures. You can get an idea of how small it is, by comparing it to the pennies .

I've found 3 silver quarter reales in my time detecting. 2 of them were in my part of Calif : Monterey county area. And the 3rd one was found in the high deserts of southern CA interior. I've found other quarter reales, but they were fractional coppers. So I guess their correct name wouldn't be "reale", I guess we'd call those "coppers" or "fractional coppers" instead of "reale".

Trash-master, good to see some CA action !

Question on that pix of 10 gold coins : Were those all found separately ? Or was that some sort of purse or stash or cache find ? Nice !!

Civil War token found at a local park under a pine tree while swinging my Fisher F2.

Aaahhh, that's like telling a parent to 'pick their favorite child'. Ya just can't do it. You can't say you like one off-spring child better than another, eh ? I've got 16 gold coins. 1 of which is key-date & *could* be $7k- to $10k ish ? (an 1862 s $10 gold). But ironically, even though it's not my "favorite", it is perhaps my most valuable of the 16. I guess I hold a resentment against it d/t I scratched it (gggrrrr). The rest of the 16 are common mints/conditions.

All 16 were individual fumble finger losses, not caches or purses. So do tell us the story of your 10 !!

I only have a couple of years under my belt and minimal skills, but have some favorites to post. The carriage watch fob popped out of an old schoolyard and is the only find where I went and put it safely in my car before I continued.
