This is how they got things across rivers. They were not dummies back in the Civil War. Just think about it. In the summer of 1864 General Sherman commanded 100,000 troops and moved them from Tennessee down through georgia all the while confederate generals Johnston and Hood did their best to keep them out of Georgia and Atlanta.

Horrific battles were fought, especially the one at Peachtree Creek and one later at Bald Hill east of Atlanta.

If you like wood working for armies, you should read about Alexander the Great.

Also for civil war builds, look for the signal towers outside DC and the hot air balloon squadron!
 
That is really neat. Reminds me of the movie Outlaw Josie Wales . The scene where Josie shoots the barge rope and the barge goes floating down the river.
