Went back to the area where I found my 1883 dog license.
I only found one coin, 1892 Indian Head Penny.
One Union Racine button cover and two bottles, but listen to this story.
I had a hit that sounded like an iron overload and a chirp or two so I dug it.
It was a 1/4" iron rod curled on the end, which turned out to be the handle to a large metal pail, upside down.
I dig and peel away the crusty pail to reveal pottery shards and start getting excited.
Keep in mind this is 2 feet deep in clay under the removed roadbed.
Managed to extract two intact bottles, one about quart size with no markings whatever.
The small one reads Ayling Bro's Chicago Trade Mark Reg 1893.
Gotta love this hobby
