I've been looking for this post for a while, I'm glad someone resurrected it. I'm going to hit 3 years detecting this spring, and here's what I've got. I think I'm doing pretty well so far.

Indian Head Penny - Many
Flying Eagle Cent - 2 of them
Wheat Penny - Many
Steel Penny - Haven't dug any, but found 2 in Coinstar, does that count?
Two Cent Piece - 1
Three Cent Silver - NO
Three Cent Nickel - NO

Shield Nickel - Yes
Barber V Nickel - Yes
Buffalo Nickel - Yes
War Nickel - Yes
Seated Dime - 1, 1876
Barber Dime - 1
Mercury Dime - A few
Silver Rosie - A few
Seated Quarter - NO
Barber Quarter - 1
Liberty Quarter - a few
Silver GW - 1
Seated Half - NO
Barber Half - 2
Liberty Half - NO
Franklin Half - NO

Silver Kennedy - Haven't dug any, but found 1 in coinstar (and several CRHing)
Morgan Dollar - 1
Peace Dollar - NO
Ike Dollar - NO
Susan B Anthony - NO

Most of this list is pretty easy to dig. Big silver is a different story. I'm way over due for a Franklin half. Barber halves at least where I live are extremely tough to dig, and I may not be scratching that off the list for a very long time. Same goes for the silver dollars!

Steel Penny: Never kept one, and the only way I knew I dug them is because they were in a spill with copper Wheats.

I think that's what's appealing about the list and limiting it to the 20th century coins. It's obtainable throughout the contiguous US and somebody putting in the time and effort can reasonably expect to make progress on completing the list. As you stated, it gets seriously difficult once you get down to a few coins. Somebody might get lucky and dig one of the dollars or halves early on the hobby, but getting them all requires a bit more luck but also a lot of effort.

Yeah I found a 2 Seated dimes two years apart before I ever found a Barber dime. I actually found my first Barber quarter before I found a Barber dime. It can be rather random when it comes to metal detecting.

I have found Morgan and Peace dollars in competitions but did not count them because they were seeded.

Silver Kennedy

Been blessed with digging everything on your list but a "V" Nickel. This being my 9th year in the hobby I still have not put my coil over one. Trapper

Like Trapper, I've found all but one, and that's a Kennedy Silver (90 or 40 per center). I'm retired and have been hunting for ten years now, and only hunt old neighborhoods. I had a first a few days ago at a 50's house. A coin spill of two Ben Franklin's. Old neighborhoods, that's the key. "Historicaerilas" can guide you to good hunting grounds. Oh, that steel penny, it was sandwiched between two wheats, otherwise it would have rotted away.
HH everyone

Nice to see the growth of this little thread I created a long time ago. Life has been hectic. I can't say I have added to my list. Still looking for those elusive Peace Dollar and silver Kennedys. There have been lots of new members come into the fold. Hope they post their lists! The 20th century list is attainable for new detectorists.
