I got out yesterday with a friend after having not detected in 2 or 3 months. I have really been hunting arrowheads pretty hard and kind of forgot about detecting.
It was pretty cold and the ground was frozen about 6" down but we were determined to find something since winter is nearly here.
We went and detected at an old abandoned town that had a horse track once upon a time. It was all out in a plowed field.
My first good find was a crotal bell and then came an 1894-O Barber half dollar! It was in terrible shape but I dont care. Then came a 1902 Indianhead, 1907 V nickel, 1918-D buffalo nickel, a 1897 Barber dime and a 1914 Canadian large cent.
The large cent was the last hole just as we were leaving and I ended up wrecking my shovel in that frozen ground.

Great hunting , congrats ! A Barber Half is still on my bucket list after many years . I really enjoyed the photos ! You are one tough cookie and a hardy soul to hunt in those circumstances . I'll bet that shovel would have screamed for mercy if it could !

Good to hear from you Tundra! Was wondering what you were up to, as I enjoy your posts with the nice Indian Head Cents and No Dak token finds! Glad you were able to rescue those coins, some old stuff!

Awesome finds - you definitely earned those coins! I'm cringing just looking at that frozen ground. Congrats on a great hunt - I'd say that spot is definitely worth re-visiting when the ground thaws.

Wow that is one fabulous hunt. I'd say if you found all that in frozen ground when it thaws those coins should be jumping out of the ground right at ya.! Nice job!

What a hunt! Thanks for posting the pictures - they are fantastic.

R.I.P., shovel.

Awesome Barber Half! Glad you could get a date off it. I agree, she's slick, but all dug halves are beautiful in my book.

Great finds! By the looks of the coins you found, I would say that this spot warrants many more return trips! Good luck!

Time to upgrade on the shovel.... I would get the Predator, it's dug 10s of thousands of holes and sharpened and re-sharpened. There is nothing better. Nice finds, awesome hunt. I have also found a few cents over the years that are bulged just like this. Is this from someone shooting it? Just wondering.

Thanks Surgeon! Once that ground freezes up here the party is over until at least April.

Thanks LtS! I've been really gettin after the arrowhead hunting in the last few months and hadn't really put much thought into detecting. Wasn't until this last week when I decided my hunting spots were hunted out until this winter after we get a lot of wind. Figured I'd try to get one last detecting outing in for the year!

Thanks SOC! That ground really sucked to dig in! A couple guys that were with didn't even attempt to dig the deeper signals since they had wimpy shovels. 2" down and it was like rock!

Thanks gale! My friend invited me to come back in the spring so I'm really excited about that! Lots more fun when the ground isn't hard as a rock!
