Sun at your back
Welcome from Boston, Will.
Advice? Here’s one I heard about years ago and try to remember when I’m out there. When you are hunting alone, wearing headphones and concentrating on what your detector is communicating, you might not be paying attention to your surroundings that much, and may not be aware of someone approaching you (for good or evil intent). Try to keep the sun at your back so you can see a person’s shadow coming up behind you (especially when kneeling to recover a target). This practice may be more important in bad neighborhoods.
Best other advice I can give is to get a decent electronic pinpointer now if you don’t already own one. In dirt fishing, Faster recoveries and fewer digging tool scrapes on those sweet, old and possibly valuable targets.
Oh, join a club if there’s one near you
Good luck & happy hunting!
