Found these today. Never seen a back like this. 2 piece but instead of a single shank it has a flat thin piece with two holes in it.
No back marks at all that I can see.

I believe it’s from a patriotic (non-military) button belt, like here: http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/what/239088-19th-century-belt-buttons-rr-related.html

Thanks, that is the 2nd merc I've pulled out of there. Both in excellent condition. Old school house. This Georgia clay is rough on a lot of metals but silver stays pretty.
