That's a hatchet or some would call a carpenters hatchet or axe. Don't know how old but I think you can still buy them.

Yes, they still sell them. They're used quite often by roofers for trimming and affixing roofing shakes. I'd imagine that they would be used for shingle siding, too. I found one in my own yard, and plan to modify it into a usable hatchet, once I get my belt grinder build done... Woot!
