Once again I managed to rescue some more Roman coins from a field.

This coin of Magnenttius is a first of type for me.

Scale is mm.

Roman farmstead.

The Roman conquest of Britain was a gradual process, beginning effectively in AD 43 under Emperor Claudius, but like all good armies troops had be fed.

Along the main routes used by the Roman military there sprung up small farms that grew a variety of crops that would have been sold to the Roman military and civilians.

Along side that many Romans settled along these main routes (Villas) so the small farms would have had a market for their crops.

I think this small 2 acre field may have held a small farm hence the coins and the pottery and the odd Roman brooch.
