Okay, so maybe I didn't find a Confederate coat....but it's part of my theory.
I went to an old 1860's built farm two days ago and had an excellent beginning. I fount a "Block I" button which the great guys on here identified as Confederate. (See the below link from my last post if you are curious)

As the story goes, the great-great Grandfather of the current homeowner was in the army during the Civil War and participated in Sherman's March. He then used the money he made when he came home and built the house which now stands there.
Anyway, I went back today for Round 2. And right off the bat, I found another of these buttons! Heck yeah, two Block I's!!! But....not too long after that, maybe 15 feet away, I dug my third.... oh man...
Here's my theory. The veteran (John Parker was his name) was rumored to be a somewhat unpleasant man. With three of these buttons, I'm guessing he came back with a Confederate Coat as a souvenir. Did he take it from a prisoner? A dead infantryman?? I'll never know. But my story goes like this: Little Johnny was wearing grandpappy's old civil war coat some years down the road while he was out playing soldier in the yard. The coat's threads were starting to get old, and the buttons started falling off while he was rolling around fighting imaginary foes..... Sound like a good theory? How else do I come across three relatively rare Confederate coat buttons in Michigan??
But who knows....
I also found four Mercury dimes today of the 1940's variety (gave the first one to the homeowner). That makes five silver coins and a sterling pin from two days in the front yard. (The back yard was a wall of iron noise and I gave up on it pretty quickly)
Wasn't until I did the opposite direction sweeps when I found the two indian cents. Finally!
And it's quite strange about that reins guide. The thing was at least a foot down and hardly has ANY oxidation on it. I know the pictures don't show it, but it's still a brass color (just not real shiny) with a few green spots.
The last photos of the three buttons is the one from two days ago with today's finds (and with a bit of Renaissance wax on 'em).
Great day to "Engage in outdoor activities"!!
