Ever wonder whether those were really found yesterday, or found at all?

Ever question whether all the wonderful finds we see on all the the different MD'ing forums of today are represented 100% accurately? After spending numerous hours on the forums I get a distinct feeling that many of these posts are inaccurate. Perhaps previous finds that are said to be dug yesterday, or maybe some pics of purchased coins or collections, etc.? Why would someone do such a thing? I dunno', perhaps for notoriety?

Just seems that there are many posts out there that are rather incredible in nature - consistent 100+ year old finds from rather new detectorists, to consistent and incredible finds at the same local tot lot week after week, to huge numbers of current clad whose pictures look like current pocket change, to maybe the same items used in multiple posts over different periods of time. Would be a real shame if this were true...

No whining and no ill feelings towards the fellow man, just thinking back to good lessons learned from Dad many eons ago saying "ya can't believe everything you read in the news..."

Well... I have yet to see any really out there claims, or anything that seems to good to be true here, so um... no?

I think there have been a couple of fake finds posted; certain types of coins are going to corrode, and there have been a couple of posts that show these type coins with no corrosion--makes them questionable.

I agree, but in this forum, it would be rare for someone to do that. Expecially for some of the members we have known for a while. The only ones I would have to question would be some of the newer members. But, until I have a good reason not to trust someone, I will trust them.

I am sure it has happen but what the heck if it made them feel good and the sun still came up so no big deal to me

I have seen no indication of such behavior here on this forum. I have had no reason to question finds on two others I frequent. RickO

The tons of clad that looks like modern pocket change thing? That's what clad is, modern pocket change.

I seriously doubt that folks would fake their claims. It's not like it would make us famous or anything.

Great finds from noobs? Sure. Great finds are largely being in the right place at the right time. Experience certainly helps, but a noob who doesn't yet know the difference between a good signal and a bad signal, or one with a cheep detector that doesn't really tell the difference, may be more likely to dig more targets and stumble upon a few good finds.

I have know people in life who generally go out of their way to misrepresent themselves, even going to the extent of faking qualifications. I wouldn't put it past a person like that to fake finds if they did metal detecting. But I haven't seen anything overtly suspicious.

It might also be that some of these folks have been detecting so long at the same sites that they have pulled all of the trash and have detectors strong enough to hit the deep targets. Some postings I've seen are from people who are a little more enthusiastic about the hobby than the average person, detecting until 5am for instance. These folks are going to find good targets because they dig like maniacs.

In the end though, does it really matter? A person faking finds is only cheeting themselves. Cheeting themselves out of the genuine satisfaction of true celebration of a job well done, and cheeting themselves of the integrety that comes from living truth.

Hay Nortonics,

I saw a photo that they were using to sell stuff
that I thought was not real.

I have seen some really nice finds that look very
clean.

But I don't think you will find many.

On this forum, I think it would be rare that someone
would go through the trouble to do that.

That's the same as someone saying they always win at the Casino or at solitaire! ......and I always say "Good 4 U"

If you find that what you say happens....the TH'er in question is probably someone who needs alot of attention or is in Competition with everyone!

The only one I'm in competition with is me!!!! I'm always trying to do better than my last time out.

If one of my club members find great stuff and I didn't, I'm always happy for them. My thought is there is more than enough lost things for everyone!

Well said Mlitty! Its odd that this subject came about, I haven't felt this on this particular forum but the other day on another forum I came across a post that this very subject crossed my mind. I don't really understand this concept and want to believe in people but to each their own I guess. Once again to quote you Mlitty: "Cheating themselves of the integrity that comes from living truth!"

I seriously doubt that happens here. I just started detecting last August and Ive found some great finds. I go out whenever I can. My wife says "So going out with your best friend again?" Thats what she calls my detector! Ive cleaned up the few silver coins and gold rings Ive found before I post pix because Im so exited I have to see how they look! I dont post my findings from every hunt, only when I think Ive something cool.

Hmmmmmm. Art these the same people who post pictures "of themselves" on dating sites, clipped from catalogs, when they really look lilke Janet Reno?

I'm sure no one in this forum would ever do anything like that...but it is possible to find things that seem umbelievable...just take a look at what I found just this morning in a tot lot only 1" down in wood chips...in absolutly perfect condition!! No really I swear!!! yea...

Ove the years I have heard many whispered tales accusing famous treasure hunters of salting their stories, and exhibiting purchases as finds.

Reasons to do this?

1. To build reputation

2. To look superior to other treasure hunters

3. And especially to sell detectors ("Look what I found with this machine! Buy it from me and you'll find these things, too!")

For the most part I think people in the hobby and very honest and trustworthy... On another board I won't mention and the poster I won't name was putting up these gold ring finds a few years ago and he was supposedly finding in the dirt and some of these rings didn't have a scratch on them and I knew him my heart he was BS artist .. I think someone called him on his finds and he vanished... come to find out the guy worked in a jewelry store...

I'm sure a certain percentage of finds are phony, but there's not much you can do about it. You can't usually prove a find is phony, even if the coin looks "too good" to have been dug. There *are* soils and ground conditions which preserve coins very well (not around here though). I can remember one instance on another forum where a member posted a coin which was proved not to be a dug find with photographic evidence. Another "find" turned out to be a photo lifted from Ebay. There's just as many dishonest people in this hobby (and this forum, too) as in any other hobby. Most will never be caught. Cynical, huh?

I don't recall looking looking at any finds shown on this forum and saying to myself, "that looks suspicious". I mean, what would anyone gain by it ?, it's not as if there's a cash prize for the best find.

The only person you'd be cheating is yourself.

As I've said before (elsewhere on this forum), there are some questionable finds made at rallies, and on "detecting holidays". Although these are not down to any deliberate deception by the finder.

I think 99.9% of detectorists are honest.
