+$20 Billion Dollar of Gold and Precious Gems found in Indian Temple vaults

Read about this on another forum... It's quite possibly the largest treasure trove ever found.
They're darn lucky this wasn't discovered during the colonial era, lest it all be sitting in a museum somewhere in London.

Quite the conundrum, as far as what to do... Lets say the value comes out to be $20b. That's $20,000,000,000. Do you realize how far that amount of money goes in a country like India, where labor rates are denominated in cents per hour? It could buy, like, the equivalent of a trillion dollars worth of labor here.
They could drastically raise the standard of living in Kerala with that kind of money, or notch up the standard of living for the entire country.

Being in tech, I have some casual business interests over there, have contracted IT services from there, etc. It is a positively fascinating place. They are growing and improving at an unbelievable clip, yet the infrastructure remains mostly 3rd World. Unlike China where their cities have gleaming skyscrapers and perfectly paved eight lane highways, in India, there are still cows roaming the streets of Mumbai.

It's almost as if half the country desperately wants progress, while the other half is entrenched in totally primitive ways. They are minting new millionaires and billionaires left and right, yet the poverty that still exists there is absolutely staggering- unlike anything you'll see anyplace else.

At once, India is the most bizarre yet fascinating place on earth. My prediction is that they will sell off a considerable amount of it for liquid funds, yet keep the objects with more profound cultural significance. The big debate will surround who gets it. India has a predilection for making decisions that are simply written off 'for the common good' and left at that, without any regard to the sorts of principles we value here in the west. It would not be a shock to see the government step in and just take it.
