Any idea what makes silver get this weird coating on it? I tried getting it off with baking soda..but it seems it would take a while...it hardly touched it

any fertilizer or chemicals, acid rain, acidic soil, coin sitting near iron etc. will do this to silver, I find it more rare to find coins without that !!!! on it to be honest.

What Mike said above causes it. I have found silver under trees is almost always oxidized. Look up foil cleaning method on youtube.

It should clean up a bit if you put it in aluminum foil with vinegar in a bowl.
You could try a toothbrush with toothpaste that will shine em up too.
