So in going through your box of odds and ends found metal detecting and sorting them out, you find you have one left over.

Is it an odd or an end?

Its obviously an odd -

You started sorting your odds and ends - so clearly you have to start with "odd" and then "end."

if one is left over, it has to be an "odd" by default.
