Massive Permission Failure

I got permission to detect an 1860's grain mill that still stands today. I went out there and detected with fierce determination only to find nothing. The ground was strangely quiet- no iron no clad nothing but crushed cans. After a while the caretaker showed up and told me that fill dirt has been added for years because of erosion. When I got home I compared 1800's pictures to the modern ones and saw that the original land was three feet lower than it is today. It was a hard failure because it was a once in a lifetime permission.

Seems strange there was nothing there. Maybe try another detector to mix it up ? You gotta try again...GL...

Don't give up. Most of my finds are from subsequent visits to the property. 90% of sites over 100 years old have had some significant grading/filling. Don't let that deter you. With that history there there is stuff there. Go slowly and maybe use a bigger coil as has been said.
