I always watch what gets shoveled into my hopper on my highbanker when prospecting for gold. Here are the polished remains of some of the petrified rocks I pulled out of the local river.

These took a month to get them to this stage in a rock tumbler.

Here's a real nice specimen.

Some more interesting finds.

Cool stuff John... And yes, I do see the bird's head, with eye and beak in that one sample. Was that only evident after tumbling?

Thanks John. Is there a lot of petrified wood lying about up there?

It's found in the North Saskatchewan River, which runs through downtown Edmonton. There is lots of it. You just have to walk along the gravel banks, and you can eyeball it. Because I am digging gravel for flower gold, I have an advantage of finding more and larger pieces.

Thanks for your reply, John. Interesting side hobby as long as you’re in the river looking for gold, eyeballing interesting bits and pieces of petrified wood.
