First go-round tumbling dirty clad...

I run mine for hours to get them that clean, and also put along with gravel, dawn & water, some generic window cleaner (cheap stuff for the ammonia). It takes about a full day to get them real clean and sparkly.

The other thing I did was to pour off the dirty water about halfway through and redo the whole shebang.

Thanks for the extra info! I'll try the cheap Windex to see how it does - the ammonia is probably a key difference, plus the added time. I also see that another thread mentioned using some Borax:

I would think anything you put in there to cut grease/grime would help. Borax is a pretty good cleaner and I may give that a try too since I have some under the sink. Didn't even think of that until you said it

I've figured out that getting the cleaned clad out of the aquarium rock media is a pain in the neck.

To rectify that, I took my freshly constructed (from and old panning sieve, new pool noodle & some zip ties) floating sieve and put a pan under it to catch the medium, leaving the coins in the sieve.

Problem solved!
