What is it made of? Brass? Copper? Aluminum? Steel or iron? Does a magnet stick to it or any part of it? How is it constructed?
My guess is that it is about 1" across.

Could be part of a wind up phonograph reproducer.......or a gas cap.
Somewhat resembles a temperature gauge, with a bi-metallic spring in the back and a pointer on the front... and the numbered portion rusted away. -just a thought, probably wrong.
I can almost convince myself that there's letters on the back (first picture), underneath the corrosion. Anyone else see anything there?

It is a fuel cap, there was a float on that shaft which in turn moved that dial hand so that you could tell how full or empty the tank was.
