My first complete one, there is a possibility I might have found pieces or a lid from one of these in the past but hard to say if you only see parts and not the complete case.

Asked for help because it seemed too thin to be a cigarette case, my first guess, bowinkles kept insisting it was just crushed flat but I didn't believe it.
He was correct after all...The side with the hinges shows the original thickness and it will fit cigarettes.

It has a map of New Jersey etched into the lid, looking online etching images on cigarette cases was popular and I saw several vintage ones etched with maps from all over the world so evidently this was a thing.
The map shows the Jersey Turnpike and that was opened in late 1951 so I figure this is a 50's to early 60's relic.

Not a speck of rust, it is made of brass and the outside had a pretty much totally tarnished black patina after taking a 50+ year dirtnap.
I scrubbed hard and the brass is coming through on the inside of the lower lid and the metal holder which was all closed up and more protected and they cleaned up a bit easier.

Pretty cool, not junk so I am happy.

A buddy here Dr. Detroit found a cigarette case in the local park in my neighborhood I have hunted literally hundreds of times.
He was in an area I have scoured in the past and he dug up something he thought was part a big smashed can.
It was tarnished completely black and covered in a crusty clay coating, something we deal with on older targets all the time.
He brought it home and was going to toss it but his wife tried to clean it and saw some letters emerging, after a good cleaning they discovered this was sterling and highly personalized.

This silver case was a signal I got many times before when I hunted this small area but never dug it because I believed it was just a big smashed can.
I was lazy, I missed out, he didn't.
At least somebody rescued it.
Nowadays I check out these bigger signals a little more carefully.

Congrats on the good find.

Very cool find!!

That’s like a one in a million find . So , I guess you dug a million targets, LOL. Nice dirty jersey cigarette case.

Awesome find!! Congrats......I wonder if that guy rolled his own funny cigarettes and shared em with his friends like they do nowadays

Thats a really cool find. You dont see those too often. Congrats.

Excellent, unique find! I love those finds that are one of a kind!

That is a very neat recovery Dave. Congrats! Trapper

Nice save, I would have torn that up with my digger probably

What a great piece of Americana!

And thanks to all!
Saving history, that is what we do after all.

Congratulations on the find. That is one of the things I have NEVER found. Guess most were found when first dropped. Was it very deep? Had to have given off a pretty loud signal. Now you can check that one off your list.
