Ring "inscription" ?

I dug this ring today, which I believe is silver, but unmarked except for a strange marking inside the band that appears like it was made with a vibrating engraver or something like it. Characters are not decipherable to me.

Any ideas? Also the ring is more square than round. Found three or four inches below the fill level on a sports field. Filling was done in the early 1970's so it's been down there awhile.

thanks for any advice or help

Looks like they used an engraving tool to obliterate the original inscription..

That was my first thought too. Someone scratched out an inscription. Maybe wanted to keep the ring, but forget what it symbolized?

Ice Scratcher, I think you are exactly right. I tested the ring with acid and it is silver. There is also a small file mark on the edge that I didn't see before, so I think it was marked as gold, the owner tried to sell it, and the tester marked out the gold karat stamping inside so no one would be fooled. (or maybe just so he wouldn't see it again and retest it)

Thanks for helping me figure it out.

You guys are amazing. I looked and looked and saw nothing.

Thank you to Ron 71 for your good eyes, and to Cellrdwellr.
