I took the opportunity during winter break to go for a longer hunt at a school where aerial images show a farmhouse where the rear parking lot and playground now stand. Right next to it, the school has a multipurpose field that would have been the side yard and part of a farm field.
Long story short, I dug a bunch of clad at the first spot plus a bunch of small rings. One turned out to be sterling. With an hour left before dark, I ran over to a pre-1960's public school spot I had been eyeballing for years. I dug a Barber dime.
Weird things for the day:
-Digging a lot of clad. I often go multiple hunts on old private permissions without finding quarters, and I only dug one dollar coin last year. Apparently kids are still carrying quarters. I dug a quarter spill and a modern clad dollar.
-This is one of the only days where I've ever dug a silver coin and no wheat pennies.
-I had a very positive police encounter at the first school. He apologized for bothering me, but saw my car in the empty school lot and not me.
- A Chuck E Cheese token spill, if two of them counts as a spill. Beat that!
-I can't find anything for sure related to that farmhouse. There's the tell-tale sound of iron in that field, though. I did dig a mystery button (with an "M" on it) that seems to have some age to it. (Any ideas?) I also found a small vintage sterling Uncas marked ring, but that could have been lost by a kid at the school.
-I dug a 50 cent piece. Sort of.
-The 1900 Barber dime was in my first hole at the second site. Not a strong, obvious signal at all. Just a squeak at first. It was on a bit of a hill but I was able to get the signal to come together and thought it was worth digging. If I was tired and hit that signal late in a long hunt after already digging some goodies, then I admit I might have skipped it. So, silver coin #1 for the year. I only had enough daylight to dig 13 more cents. Yeah, I'm going back sometime.
Two different public school spots. Two totally different hunts.
Good luck out there in 2020.
