Hi everyone. I have a question I'm hoping you all can help me with. I have an extremely special ring that I lost in the house sometime between yesterday and today. I have 2 little girls who might have picked it up and taken off with it. The first thing I thought of after spending all day searching was using a metal detector. Would that work inside the house? I'm desperate to find it.

Thank you so much!

Hmm... most metal detectors go nuts in house because of all the nails and wiring... a pinpointer might do the trick... or maybe just a simple wand detector like security people use would help you sort through piles of toys or stuff animals and clothes... just my $0.02... good luck btw.

Thank you :) I've never head of a pinpointer? Do you know if I am able to rent any of these things? Also I read something about how some metal detectors can be put on specific settings. This ring was 18 k white gold. Not sure if that would make a difference as far as the wiring and nails or not?

Thanks again! I've been asking friends and they keep telling me to get one. It's good to talk to someone who knows something about it!

You could get lucky and live near one of our members who might have a pinpointer to come to the rescue.. haha. If you had a metal detecting shop near you it's conceivable they may let you rent one for a bit, not sure. And yeah, the detectors can be tuned to fit your needs... but getting the coil anywhere near the floor really sets em off... well im my house it does, haha. I hope someone else chimes in to help you out.

Thanks =) You're really fast! What is this pinpointer? Is it like a detector? I keep thinking about the two metal poles my dad uses witch water, lol.

pinpointer is a small handheld detector that only senses at the very tip, so you know you metal is VERY close if it goes off. They look like this:

Small, compact, easy to use.

oh my, so do I have to basically be on top of it to find it? There's no telling where my daughter put it! I might look into one though, thanks!

Are you sure the ring was lost in the house? I do a lot of detecting on beaches and in the water and I have never found jewelry where someone said they lost it.

Well, my van has been in the repair shop for the last two days. I've taken my grandmother's car to vacation bible school twice, but besides that I've been home.

I did a lot of cleaning yesterday and am thinking i took it off for that. I also take it off periodically (usually at night though) b/c my fingers swell in the summer and it gets a little tight. I would say I'm 98 percent sure that it's somewhere in the house.

This ring has never slipped off my finger.

sectshun-I just noticed you're in va. beach. I lived out there for four years. Went to Bayside High School and moved my senior year back to Indiana. I miss it a ton!

If the ring can't slip off of your fingers, you must have taken it off. You need to just sit down, relax, and try to remember the last place you noticed it.

Do you have a special dish you put the ring in? We're you in the cleaning closet? Go out to the garage? Try to remember the last place you were when you saw it. Was it bugging you while you were cleaning? Did you reach down inside of a couch or chair? Scrubbing the toilet??? Did you use a bucket of soapy water?

I don't think a metal detector is going to help in this situation unless you lost it out in the yard.

You're right. I'm so incredibly stressed right now. I have my very first teaching interview on Friday and my brother in law is coming in from Florida on the same day. His parents are flying him up 10 days before they come, so he's staying with us. Nice  Anyhow, I can hardly concentrate on anything. I keep closing my eyes trying to remember and nothing is coming to me :(

The problem is, I also have a 17 month old who is well known for grabbing and hiding. Yes, I know....my fault for being careless....just haven't been thinking much like my normal self lately.

thanks for your suggestions.
Oh, here's a pic of the ring....except it's white gold. Just thought I'd share :)

Oh dear.... but surely you couldn't have put it somewhere where baby could reach it. Looks like a huge ring. You must have set it somewhere.

You HAVE to remember the last place you saw it.

The other day I was working in the garden and took off my gardening gloves and hung them on a branch in a tree... something I never do. The next day, for the life of me, I couldn't find them and I looked everywhere for them. I told the hubby I can't find my gloves and he looked for them too.

Then the next day I was sitting on the patio and was thinking, "What the heck did I do with my gloves?" Then I remembered "hanging them" and suddenly I said, "I hung them on something! and then I remembered the tree. I felt so stupid.

But you probably set it someplace where you do not normally set it.

More clues:
Were you wearing something with pockets?
Where does the baby hide stuff?

Search is the key...

Inside the house...no go with a 'tector will be a truthful answer. Next is, with a second ring and scanning this, a detector with the capability to identify the object could help ya outdoors. COULD. A slight changing in environment conditions can smash this advantage.

If you want back this ring, you have to search for it every place in your house and outdoors.

Thanks Carol. I slept 3 hours last night b/c I've been searching EVERYWHERE! I thought maybe I would stick it in my pockets, but don't see it. I looked through the dirty clothes thinking it might have fallen out....nope. As far as the baby....hard tellin'. She just walks around and who knows where she would have dropped it if she grabbed it. Also, she's just now reaching places she never did before. And like I said....it's quite possible that i was stupid enough to sit it somewhere I shouldn't have. I've been under a lot of stress and tired, and if I just too it off for a second, I can see her snatching it.

I'm going to call the place where I got my ring when they open and see if they do replacement rings. I'm pretty sure i read somewhere on the brochure when I ordered it, that they did. The only problem with that is my parents bought it for me for a graduation gift. They paid over the phone and never got a receipt.

**fingers are crossed**

off to search a little more....

Good luck... a metal detector will not help in this situation. Calm down, relax... write out a systematic list of areas to look.... as you do this, make sure each area is THORUOUGHLY searched, then cross it off the list. Start with the least likely places first, to help you get in the 'super search' mode. And as always, it will be in the last place you look (obviously, or you would continue searching :lol: ),,,, this method should help you find your ring. At least you will not be searching the same areas over and over. Hope it works ... RickO

Thanks Rick :) I have to clean my house today anyway, so I guess this is a good way to do it. I have an extremely bad memory so I'm going to do what you suggested and start from the back of the house and work up. I feel like I've already done that. But I'm going to try again and as you said, cross one room off at a time.

Thanks for your help.

I know how you feel. I absolutely hate losing things. It drives me nuts. Maybe that's why I enjoy metal detecting?

Whenever I can't find something I always look in the obvious places. Then when it's not there, I look in the "not so obvious" places.

Best of luck, Rick has a good idea.

let us know what happens. I feel you will eventually find it.

I would resort to psychological War Fare!

Make a game out of it with the little ones. No interrogations or the like. A game. Show them a ring some what like the missing item and tell them there on a Treasure hunt. Who ever finds it, gets a Ice Cream or two. You may be surprised!:p

Hi , I sure hope you find your ring.
Last week my wife ws going crazy looking for a ring that I designed and had made for her 20 plus years ago... She always takes her rings off and puts them in the same place everytime!
She finally looked up on top of a entertainment center in a spare bedroom that she had been cleaning in and there it was UNDER a large doilly on top.
She has no memory of putting it there.
If you were cleaning the day you lost your ring,Is it possible that you vacumed it up and didn't notice it?
I wish you luck ,as I know how stressed something like that can make a person.
