I am using Union created maps of 1864 of the Confederate and Union positions around Atlanta. I usually find three reference points like confluences of two creeks to adjust the Civil War Maps to Google Earth.

I am just wondering how accurate these will show the fortifications on the overlay of Google Earth?

anyone have experience with this and know the answer?

My experience with cw maps is they are pretty far from the real terrain. I do find better results using detailed TOPO maps instead of a satellite overlay. The cw maps usually have topo features illustrated and can help spot flat areas, original creek beds, and etc when compared to the recent ones.

Much depends on how accurate the original maps were,.
