Old Canteen???

Hi Folks, I didn't find this with my detector, but I'm very curious to what it could be??? My father in law gave it to me, he said it's been in his family for years. He's Italian, so I'm wondering if it's some old Italian canteen???? WWI or WWII, or am I way off???????? Any bit of info would be greatly appreciated!!! Tom

Not real sure, but it looks like a small fuel bottle for their portable camp stoves. Just a guess.

Thanks for the guess but it seems WAY too heavy for that. It DOES have a ball bearing (or something inside). It also has the stamp "GR" or maybe "SR"...........The tiny stamp is ornate, with tiny flowers or leaves....
